Istvan Sandor began his career working in recordkeeping and archiving. While serving aboard the USS Yamato, he began working on a recreational device he called a “holography room,” where solid-holograms could be used to recreate a relaxing (or not) environment of a person's choice. His work was severely damaged when the Yamato took a hit from an enemy bomb that was disguised as a probe, and the Yamato was sent back to dock for extensive repairs. Sandor was also severely damaged, but recovered; although to this date he has not grown back his eyebrows or eyelashes.
