"Chip" comes from a subset of a dying species. endemic to the planet Attodah.

Chip would prefer to be solitary, although she often shares her quarters with one or more of the La Plata River Dolphins with which she shares the aquatic portions of the ship.

Chip always refers to herself as "This Self" and to others as "That Self" unless speaking to someone directly, in which case she restricts herself to using their ranks only.

Chip is utterly devoted to cryptography and cryptanalysis, to the point where she invents codes both while on and off duty, "to relax, and to annoy everyone." The Captain has had to limit her access to the cryptography database to once weekly to keep her fron constantly updating things and driving everyone crazy.

Chip had given birth, as Chíkshu do, to several hundred live young just before the departure of the Trouble on its maiden voyage. Most of these were kept at the Yantarru university (the Yantarru are attempting to keep the Chíkshu from extincting their own selves), but a half dozen of them were brought along on the ship. Being very tiny, they got into way too many things, so the Captain offered to keep them in the saltwater aquarium in her (the Captain's) quarters, which is where they currently reside.
